Hi Nick - really enjoyed your post, got me thinking and my brain back into blog-mode after holidays.

I think you're right. I really enjoyed the FB group a lot at the start - the people on there seemed like an interesting bunch, the chat was fun - it felt like a genuine community. I also liked the fact that whilst it was a virtual group you'd also started to think about how to take that into the real world (a la MeetUp.com) But then you're right, I guess that it got too big. It lost that sense of community, it started to feel more like a recruiter hangout.

At the same time I probably signed up to too many FB groups generally and started drowning a bit. The group that I still do use a fair bit is built in Ning.com, the Plannersphere group which although big still has a sense of community. Maybe it's because at its heart its a planning community rather than an advertising generally community.

Anyway, your FB will still go down in adland history as probably the first and certainly the biggest online ad group and you're right its a great case study in online communities.

Mate, first comment on the new blog. Nice work.

On point 3, I think you can blog about different subjects and still have a clear raison d'etre - one thats tied up in your personality and/or unique way of seeing the world...

Couple of points:
- Firstly- loving the fact I'm next to Faris Yakob in a blog roll. Probably won't last long, but going to milk it whilst it lasts.
- Secondly, yes, totally agree. Your Raison d'etre needs to bind the group for them to return and become an ACTIVE community.
- Thirdly, case in point for your argument on focusing in on something- my blog. I blog about too many random things that are not connected enough or I don't not make enough effort to link them i.e. football and social media; if a reader is interested in finding out more about social media, they'll read a blog dedicated to social media, not a jack of all trades master of none website which dabbles in a bit of foots, a bit of banter, a bit of advertising, PR, digital etc. I think I'm going to have to have a rethink, after all, the internet is a niche medium.
- Fourthly, blog is looking smart. Good work
- Fifthly, I should probably just pop over and tell you this next time eh?!
